Animals

Would you rather be able to talk to animals or speak every human language?

Then ask: Which animal would you talk to first, and what would you ask?

Hear it out loud

Then ask: Who could you help with the one you picked?

  1. Would you rather have a dog that can talk or a horse that can fly?

Then ask: Where would the two of you go on the first day?

  2. Would you rather be as fast as a cheetah or as strong as an elephant?

Then ask: Which one would help you more on an ordinary school day?

  3. Would you rather have a tail like a monkey or wings like a bat?

Then ask: What would be annoying about it after a week?

  4. Would you rather live with a family of penguins or a family of monkeys for a month?

Then ask: What would you have to learn first to fit in?

  5. Would you rather have a pet dragon the size of a cat or a pet cat the size of a dragon?

Then ask: What would you explore first, and what would you hope to find?

  7. Would you rather take care of ten puppies for a day or one baby elephant for a week?

Then ask: What would be the hardest part, and who would you ask for help?

  8. Would you rather be a bird that can fly anywhere or a dolphin that can swim anywhere?

Then ask: What would you miss about being a person?

  9. Would you rather have a pet that stays a baby forever or a pet that can do one trick nobody else's pet can?

Then ask: What trick would it be, and who would you show first?

  10. Would you rather ride on the back of a whale or on the back of an eagle?

Then ask: What could you see from there that you can't see any other way?

  11. Would you rather sleep all winter like a bear or stay awake all night like a bat?

Then ask: What would you miss while everyone else did the opposite?

  12. Would you rather have every animal like you or have every animal understand you?

Then ask: Is being liked the same as being understood? What is the difference?

  13. Would you rather have a pet octopus or a pet parrot that repeats everything you say?

Then ask: Which one would get you in more trouble, and how?

  14. Would you rather change color like a chameleon or grow back lost teeth like a shark?

Then ask: When would each one come in handy?

  15. Would you rather spend a day as your pet or have your pet spend a day as you?

Then ask: What do you think would surprise you about their day?

  16. Would you rather work at a zoo or at an animal hospital?

  19. Would you rather be friends with a lion that is always hungry or a skunk that is always nervous?

Then ask: How would you keep the friendship safe for both of you?

The choice is only the start. Under each question there is a follow-up to ask next. That second question is where your kid stops guessing and starts explaining.

Want a shorter list? Try the funny ones or a season: Thanksgiving, winter, Christmas, spring, summer or fall.

How to play

Take turns. Your kid answers one, then asks you one. Answer honestly, and let them ask you the follow-up too.

Nobody keeps score, because there is no wrong pick. What you are after is the reason. If the answer is “I don’t know,” ask which of the two they would give up first.

It works anywhere you have ten minutes and nothing to look at: dinner, the car, a waiting room. With a class or a big group, read a question out, send kids to one side of the room or the other, and ask a few from each side to explain.
