Khanmigo is Khan Academy's AI tutor. It costs $4 a month, needs a U.S. billing address, and is built to walk a student toward an answer without stating it. This page is a briefing from Khan Academy's own pages and one independent test, checked in October 2026. It is not a hands-on review over a school term.
What Khanmigo is
Khanmigo is a chat tutor that sits on top of Khan Academy's lessons. Khan Academy describes it this way: "Khanmigo doesn't give answers; it helps kids think through problems, build confidence, and stay curious."
It covers "almost any academic subject, including math, science, coding, history, and humanities," for students "in elementary school through college." A kid can type or speak, and Khanmigo can read its replies out loud.
Is Khanmigo free?
For teachers, yes. Khan Academy gives its teacher tools away in the United States and some other countries. Students get classroom access only when a school or district sets it up.
For families it costs $4 a month or $44 a year, before sales tax. One parent subscription covers up to ten kids. The person who subscribes has to be 18 or older and have a U.S. residence and billing address, so a parent signs up and adds the kids.
What parents can see
On the family plan you can read the history of your kids' conversations with Khanmigo, and you get an alert when a conversation is flagged by moderation. Khan Academy cites a four-star rating from Common Sense Media.
Where it falls short
It can ignore what the student already knows. Math educator Dan Meyer tried it informally and wrote that Khanmigo "treated me as though I knew absolutely nothing." That is one test by one person, but it names the risk of any tutor that leads with questions: the questions have to start from the kid's own attempt.
It is tied to schoolwork. The plan is described as "personalized tutoring on Khan Academy content." It covers the math unit, the essay and the test, and it does not go beyond schoolwork.
It is U.S. only for paid plans.
Who it suits
A kid who already uses Khan Academy for school and a parent who wants to see what was asked. At $4 a month for up to ten kids, it is the cheapest of the tools on our comparison pages.
